My mother died of heart disease when I was ten. Five of her seven brothers and sisters died of heart related illnesses too. But it never crossed my mind to worry. I thought I was invincible. I’ve always been fit and healthy so I just didn’t think about it. Twenty years ago my doctor told me my cholesterol was 309 but I refused to go on statin drugs. I didn’t believe cholesterol caused heart disease, whatever the doctors said, and, in any case, I didn’t believe I would ever get heart problems. I was invincible after all. I promptly forgot about my cholesterol and went on with my life, enjoying the French and Italian cheeses I was addicted to and at least two eggs for breakfast every day.
But time went by and my life became more stressful. Very stressful in fact. And so a year ago I went for another physical and discovered that my cholesterol was still up there at almost 300 and this time tests showed that I had some blockage in my aortic valve and one of my coronary arteries. I had no symptoms and felt as good as ever, but I had to confront the reality that for whatever reason, my cardiovascular system was damaged.
I was insulted. How could that be? I had started to age in the worst way. I was absolutely horrified at the idea that I could become an invalid, careful not to over-exert myself, worried I might drop dead of a sudden heart attack. That would be no way to live and I was much too young to contemplate it.
And so I determined I was going to cure this. Not just prevent it deteriorating further as my doctors said I could do. But reverse it! Clean out those arteries! Stop whatever had caused it! Make myself completely healthy again! The cardiologist smiled sadly at me and said that wasn’t possible. My internist screamed at me, yes, screamed at me, that unless I did as I was told and took those statin drugs, I was going to die of a heart attack or a stroke! I vowed to prove her wrong.
Since then, I’ve learned so much, and found out so many things the doctors didn’t tell me about treating heart disease, things that apply also to all the aging diseases - diabetes, arthritis, rheumatism, and even cancer - things that we can do to stave off the aging process, to stay healthy, vibrant, and strong throughout our lives.
it’s my mission now to pass on this information to others so that somewhere around 2050, when I reach the 100 plus age group, I will have lots of company to have fun with.
